THE NEED
To address competitive challenges and outdated software, Poll Everywhere undertook a two-year project to enhance our core product experience, focusing on improving poll visualizations.
Challenge
1. Improve usability
2. Lower product complexity
3. Modernize UI
Goals
Improved NPS score, increased presentation rates, decrease in support tickets, account renewals, new sign ups.
Success Metrics
Identified top competitors and conducted a core feature analysis, examining visualizations across various activity types to understand key differences.
Competitor Analysis
UNDERSTANDING THE LANDSCAPE
Establish a baseline of the competitive landscape and identify opportunities for Poll Everywhere to fill the gaps.
Goals
Overall, Poll Everywhere offers the most comprehensive set of features among competitors, but it fell short in modern and consistent UI patterns.
Takeaways
WIREFRAMES & USER FEEDBACK
01
Clear instructions for audience members to join are crucial but should not occupy a prominent part of the chart. The QR code should be easily scannable without distracting from the visualization.
Voting Instructions

02
Poll Everywhere offers a wide range of poll types, from multiple choice to word clouds. This initial visualization update aims to enhance readability, usability, and feature access while preserving the Poll Everywhere brand.

Given the significant update to our core product experience, I adopted an iterative approach and prioritized early customer feedback. Alongside a product marketing manager, I conducted 3 rounds of user interviews for a total of 40 via Zoom to gather insights from key accounts and generate excitement about the upcoming changes.

ROLLOUT & IMPLEMENTATION
01
Launching a project of this scale was no small feat, and with our limited resources, we needed to quickly redefine the MVP. Collaborating closely with my PM and engineering lead, we developed a three-phase rollout plan.
Determining the MVP
Implement the voting instructions with the updated features: minimize and QR code.
Phase 1
Implement the multiple choice poll changes first because they make up over 80% of all polls.
Phase 2
Rollout the remaining poll types that include, FTP, CIP, open-ended, surveys, and competitions.
Phase 3
02
Poll Everywhere has 12 different visualizations that required attention in this redesign. The project successfully achieved its goals, including maximizing screen real estate for presenters, modernizing the UI and visualizations, and enhancing the usability and functionality of poll features.

RESULTS & TAKEAWAYS
Final Thoughts
Wow, it was a long two years, but seeing this project come to fruition was incredibly rewarding. It was even more gratifying to witness users appreciate the changes we made. Despite numerous challenges, including limited staffing and resources, managing stakeholder expectations, and redefining the rollout plan, it was a great lesson in learning how to roll with the punches. Ultimately, the end result was better for it.
